Funcom released details about the dangerous dungeons adventure for Age of Conan.
We havent really been too generous when it comes to screenshots of dungeons, have we Well, this week we want to remedy that.
Let?ˉs start off with The Black Ring Citadel, one of the very high-level dungeons you?ˉll get to visit in the game. Nested somewhere in the vastness of the Stygian deserts, this place of raw evil and corruption is home to some of the greatest challenges Hyboria will throw at you. Moving through the pitch-black shadows of the citadel is an experience unlike any other, and only the bravest of adventures will be able to claim the treasure this place holds deep inside its halls of death.
Anyone following the aoc development can probably agree to the fact that it boasts some beautiful landscapes. Snow-covered mountains, far-stretching woodlands and burning deserts are all well and good ¨C but what about those nasty, dark dungeons It?ˉs time we lifted the veil just a little bit and introduced you to that part of aoc as well. There are, after all, some really incredible dungeons in virtual Hyboria.

Australia, April 23, 2008 - Writer Robert E. Howard �C or “Two-Gun Bob” as he was known to his friends �C created the literary character known as Conan the Barbarian in 1932. Howard’s use of dense, dark prose and rich, fantastic imagery has been credited by many with starting the Sword-and-Sorcery sub-genre. Something that has been a bountiful, creative well for other mediums. We’ve had multiple Conan books, numerous comic book incarnations, two movies �C Conan the Barbarian (quite good) and Conan the Destroyer (quite shit) and of course, Conan games. THQ, for example, released a Conan action game in 2007 on consoles and provided a divertingly violent, if shallow and derivative experience.

The point of all this is that Howard’s lead character all too often gets adapted when, really, it’s his Hyborian universe that possesses the depth and interest that has sustained the franchise decades later. Thus enters aoc(age of conan): Hyborian Adventures (AoC), an ambitious MMORPG that has been in development since 2003 and is due to be released on PC shortly with an Xbox 360 version to follow in 2009.
age of conan really puts the “massive” in MMO, so we’ve managed to see the title in various stages of beta testing. The main game is vast and in a weekend PvP match staged by the game’s creators Funcom, we were given a little taste of it before trying to stick weapons into our fellow online human foes.

Age of Conan is set after the titular barbarian–following many years of bloody struggle and plunder–has become king of the city of Aquilonia. “But,” according to Funcom, “Conan’s rule is on the brink of chaos, spiraling towards the doom of ancient evils.” The game will incorporate the various elements of Howard’s “dark, lush, violent, and sinful universe,” including “cruel gods, mythical creatures, lost civilizations, and a struggling human race.”
Besides an apparently extensive story, Age of Conan will feature 7.1 surround audio and advanced graphics, as evidenced by the screenshots accompanying the release. The gameplay promises to go “against the formulaic nature of online RPG combat.” Using a “Real Combat” engine and a “multipoint melee system,” players will be able to target specific parts of their opponents’ bodies.

The multiplayer part of the age of conan will also feature real-time strategy elements, which will let players create formations of characters and non-player characters. The age of conan will also feature large-scale battles, which will let players attack hostile strongholds, as well as more-standard MMORPG elements, like guilds.
Funcom also said the game’s launch would accompany a whole new wave of Conan products, including a Dark Horse Comics series, an anime film, new novels, and a toy line from McFarlane Toys.

Later when I logged in I picked up a quest to go to thunder river which was a new area for me. You can get there through the Poitain gathering zone and the place is populated with level 60+ mobs. I picked up some red quests and had a blast doing them as they were really challenging at around level 59~. It almost felt like making up after a fight with a good old friend, after the negative sewer experience. I think I’m starting to develope a healthy love hate relationship with this game/Funcom.

To understand my point of view with grinding you have to know a little bit about my MMO history and about Lineage 2 in particular, which is the game I played for the longest period of time and still have my loyalties at. L2 is often nicknamed “Grindage 2″ and for a reason too.
I played L2 for over three years. Tried out the retail servers, but that wasn’t my thing with all the bots, dual boxing and ebaying going around. So I ended up playing on the so called ‘private servers’ for the majority of my L2 career, because on private servers botting and dual boxing are actually monitored and banned.
I just hope I will be able to look back on Age of Conan in three years, with the same kind of warm memories, as I do on Lineage 2 now.

Funcom’s Age of Conan - Hyborian Adventures has debuted at the top of the sales charts in Germany and Sweden, beating out Rockstar’s previously untouchable GTA IV. This bolsters the claim that the Funcom/Eidos published MMO, recently released in late May, is one of fastest selling MMOs to date. Age of Conan also debuted well in Spain; while it didn’t beat GTA IV, it did garner a solid fourth place position in a otherwise Wii-dominated market. The list, according to next-gen.biz.
